A regular wellness exam is a front-line habit that can result in health benefits for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen often feel like, \u2018We\u2019re invincible, we don\u2019t need to go to the doctor,\u2019\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/kevin-borgerding\/\">Dr. Kevin Borgerding<\/a>, a doctor of internal medicine in Steamboat Springs and a member of the medical staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>. \u201cBut even if you\u2019re healthy, there are certain things we want to assess with screening. From cardiovascular health and mental health, to overall lifestyle habits and cancer screenings, it makes sense to keep tabs on your health and strive for preventative efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, Borgerding outlines the benefits of wellness exams for men.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Men&#8217;s annual exams look at the big picture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During a wellness exam, a medical provider reviews overall health, so they are able to catch potential health issues that may span various organ systems or aspects of life.<\/p>\n<p>Expect your medical provider to review exercise habits, overall diet, weight and body mass index or BMI, hearing and vision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/whats-in-a-number-blood-pressure-explained\/\">blood pressure<\/a> and heart health, the gastrointestinal system and the musculoskeletal system, and more. Your provider should also make sure your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/vaccines-for-adults\/\">immunizations<\/a> are up-to-date and review your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/sleep-help-simple-tips-can-improve-sleep\/\">sleep<\/a> and stress levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very comprehensive,\u201d Borgerding said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at the total well-being of an individual. Stress, substance abuse, sports injuries \u2013 we cover all of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Check off major screenings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/preventive-care-screenings\/\">health screenings<\/a> men should consider, all of which can be included in a regular wellness exam. But they should feel comfortable about communicating with their provider,\u201d Borgerding said. \u201cI\u2019ve seen it all and heard it all, so there\u2019s nothing they\u2019re going to say that\u2019s going to shock me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A man&#8217;s wellness exam doesn\u2019t have to be yearly<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on a man\u2019s age, current health and family history, a regular wellness exam may only need to happen every two or three years.<\/p>\n<p>But starting at age 50, all men are encouraged to have a wellness exam every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings can change,\u201d Borgerding said. \u201cHaving a regular wellness exam can help catch changes in weight, psycho-social situations and chronic health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Find your motivation for getting a wellness exam<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t take a health scare for someone to decide to get a regular wellness exam. Men who are married or who have children can consider it a gift to their family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFathers out there may want to think about more than themselves,\u201d Borgerding said. \u201cThey\u2019ve got to be thinking about their spouse and their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And studies show that people who are more aware of their health are more likely to be healthier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you pay more attention to your health, then you tend to do better overall,\u201d Borgerding said. \u201cPeople who seek out regular medical visits are often more motivated and tend to thrive with their health in the long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This article first appeared in the Steamboat Pilot &amp; Today.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; It&#8217;s a good time of\u00a0year for men to take stock of their health.
