Photos by Joel Blocker, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each sister left Fort Collins after high school but they eventually returned to northern Colorado, and now they take turns checking in on their still independent 99-year-old father.<\/p>\n<p>Lane Oesterle-Miller, the oldest of the three, was the second to move back, in 1996. As she settled into her community once again, she began looking for a primary care doctor. A friend recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/cathy-l-ow-md-internal-medicine\/\">Dr. Cathy Ow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ow had gone to <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.duke.edu\/education\/degree-programs-and-admissions\/doctor-medicine-md-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke University School of Medicine<\/a> and did her residency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/im-residency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA<\/a>. She started her internal medicine practice in the Army then joined a multispecialty practice in Hawaii before coming to Fort Collins in 1995 to start her own practice, which is now called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/internal-medicine-clinic-snow-mesa\/\">UCHealth Internal Medicine \u2013 Snow Mesa<\/a>. Her sister, Lynn Oesterle-Zollner, background, along with sister, Jill Hultin, are also patients of Ow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was so nice to have a woman doctor who can relate to what you\u2019re going through,\u201d Oesterle-Zollner said.<\/p>\n<p>Oesterle-Zollner had come to Ow already diagnosed with polymyositis, an inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness, and she was taking hormones at the time for early menopause.<\/p>\n<p>Ow encouraged her to get off the hormones immediately because her family had a history of breast cancer, which may grow on estrogen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one had ever said that to me, and I appreciated her honesty,\u201d Oesterle-Zollner said. \u201cAnd when my rheumatologist retired, she helped me transition to a new one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Navigating the complex world of health care with someone you trust, such as a primary care physician, can make all the difference, Ow pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this day and age, things are so complicated,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat is the first test? Where do you go? What medications are appropriate? As a patient, you can\u2019t do these things on your own and know you are doing the right thing. Just over a year later, Ow had to call Hultin with the news that she had breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis woman here saved my life,\u201d Hultin said about Ow as she gave her a hug during a recent visit to her office.<\/p>\n<p>Ow stressed that it wasn\u2019t just her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a team here,\u201d Ow said. \u201cAnd now we are able to better communicate between offices and with our patients. Through My Health Connection, patients can contact their physicians, look at lab results, schedule appointments and see their doctors\u2019 notes. And doctors get the same seamless advantage of having a patient\u2019s health care history at their fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>Hultin is now 10 years free of cancer, and all three women continue to go to Ow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very close,\u201d Ow said. \u201cWe talk about them caring for their dad, how everyone is doing.
