Photo by Robert Allen, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Singing transporter writes, performs song for patient<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>People at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital called Ethan Hill the \u201csinging transporter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d brighten up patients\u2019 days by singing to them as he moved them between departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes they give me the \u2018who\u2019s this guy?\u2019 look. Sometimes they start laughing,\u201d he said, adding that some patients would sing along.<\/p>\n<p>One day in early 2020, he heard about a small celebration with cupcakes honoring a big milestone for a cancer patient, whom he\u2019d previously transported, and their spouse. Hill wanted to play them a song on guitar, but nobody could find one in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>He went home, wrote a song just for them and posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P7BSpZ0Nh7Y&amp;feature=youtu.be\">the video<\/a> on social media. The patient\u2019s nurse showed it to them before discharge, and the song caused tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know very much about them,\u201d Hill said. \u201cI just kind of took some general things and put them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he understands how patients can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the hospital experience, with so many different people coming and going, and it\u2019s his goal to make the experience \u201cnot so dark and gloomy\u201d as some might expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody wants to go to the hospital,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in my mind, if everyone\u2019s in a very warm, happy mood, it creates just that little bit of a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, that goes beyond singing. Hill last year was recognized by a patient who\u2019d been experiencing emotional and physical trauma from an amputation. The patient said Hill took the time to help them get cleaned up, even though it wasn\u2019t his job. The patient was in tough financial circumstances, and Hill also brought them a backpack and clothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took the time to acknowledge me, care for me and to reassure me that everything was going to be OK,\u201d according to the patient.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The singing transporter has left the building<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In April 2020, nearly a year after he started his position at PVH, Hill became an emergency medical technician with UCHealth LifeLine critical care ground transport. It\u2019s the next step as he pursues his goal of becoming a flight medic.<\/p>\n<p>He said he misses the interactions in the hospital, but he enjoys working on the ambulance team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first company that I work for that I\u2019ve truly enjoyed \u2013 actually looked forward to \u2013 coming to work,\u201d he said, adding that UCHealth \u201copened my eyes to good\u201d opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Young, Hill\u2019s former manager at PVH, said he \u201ckept our team upbeat with his songs, conversation and get-it-done attitude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan always did the extra things for our patients to settle them in their rooms, which was comforting for our patients and also a helpful hand for our nursing staff.
