Cardiac patients love technician\u2019s hearts, compassion<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A smiley face, an octopus juggling hearts or a tree with hearts for fruit: Each of these small sketches adds warmth to tent cards informing patients their rooms were cleaned on the cardiac unit at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re a signature gesture from Nelly Eckhardt, an environmental services technician appreciated by patients and colleagues for her kind attentiveness.<\/p>\n

\u201cNelly just comes in with a smile all the time,\u201d said Jumer Sapinoro, a nurse manager,\u00a0adding that patients appreciate her personable, positive manner. \u201cThey know they\u2019re going to get that from Nelly every single morning they\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patients nominated her \u201ca bunch of times\u201d for the DAISY Award, a special recognition to honor nurses, he said. The nominations say she came in twice per day with a \u201ccalm, comforting presence,\u201d is \u201ckind and efficient\u201d and \u201cmade us feel safe during the time of COVID-19.\u201d She\u2019s also been called \u201cextremely attentive,\u201d caring, calming and \u201cshe\u2019s a jewel,\u201d according to the nomination forms.<\/p>\n

But Eckhardt isn\u2019t a nurse. Since she can\u2019t receive a DAISY Award, Sapinoro instead gives her \u201cHelping Hands\u201d award pins \u2013 which are usually for certified nursing assistants.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at her as a very valued member of MCR in general,\u201d Sapinoro said. \u201cI feel like she\u2019s part of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eckhardt said it makes her happy when the patients are happy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is such a blessing to be here helping others,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She always wanted to be a nurse. But Eckhardt said her father encouraged her to instead pursue business, and she obtained a business degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, working in areas such as public transportation and accounting. She got married and moved to Houston, raising three kids as a homemaker for 21 years before moving to Colorado after her husband retired.<\/p>\n

She started with UCHealth in November 2017, and a short time later, she began adding artwork to the tent cards for patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes they laugh,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes they write, \u2018I\u2019m so glad you helped me,\u2019 things like that. That makes me happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eckhardt in September was announced as a semi-annual MCR Wall of Fame recipient, having been nominated by the cardiac nursing staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatients often comment on not only how friendly she is, but how well she cleans the room. They have said, \u2018She doesn\u2019t waste any motion,\u2019\u201d according to the nomination. \u201cWhen Nelly is working, I am reassured that everything is going to be clean because she has a commitment to detailing; it\u2019s not just performing a cursory cleaning, but a deep clean that\u2019s mindful of getting the nooks and crannies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love what I do,\u201d Eckhardt said. \u201cI\u2019m very blessed to be here in this hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
