Photo by Robert Allen, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Nurse sleeps on couch to help mom out of predicament<\/h2>\n<p>A few days after a mother gave birth at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, she faced an unsettling predicament.<\/p>\n<p>The baby was ready for discharge. But the mother was still dealing with severe complications. It was late in the day, and she didn\u2019t have anyone immediately available to take care of the baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf mom is a patient, you\u2019re by default considered unstable,\u201d said Clara Hogan, nurse with MCR women\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>By 9 p.m., hospital management and the house supervisor were involved, trying to figure out what to do about this situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was starting to get pretty stressful. We take everyone\u2019s safety seriously,\u201d Hogan said.<\/p>\n<p>She had previously worked with the patient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like I had a pretty good rapport with her,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019ll just sleep here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shift ended at 11 p.m. Instead of going home to her husband and kids, she slept in the patient\u2019s room, on the couch. This was completely voluntary; Hogan wasn\u2019t paid for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf mom got in trouble, I would be there until the family showed up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>That night, she chatted with the mother and changed the baby one time. She said the baby actually slept better than her own kids did at that age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to be in a position to make a difference for people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nurse manager Laurie Dupuis said that Hogan is \u201cone of the most innately caring individuals I have ever met,\u201d selfless in regards to her patients and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara\u2019s first thought is kindness,\u201d Dupuis said. \u201cShe doesn\u2019t even understand why praise is provided her because, for her, caring and kindness is the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hogan, who\u2019s been with the hospital for about five years and has been a nurse for 14 years, said she was just happy she could help, and that it was \u201ca very little thing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what nursing is about though, right?\u201d she said. \u201cTaking those opportunities to help people out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dupuis said that she\u2019s \u201can exceptional human being.
