Nobody wants to end up in urgent care or the emergency room. So this year, the doctors and caregivers at UCHealth urge you to follow these tips and reminders to stay well and keep safe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prevent falls<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cIf you\u2019re putting up Christmas lights, make sure the ladder is firmly standing on dry ground,\u201d said Dr. Jamie Teumer, emergency medical director at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland. \u201cAlso, we recommend that people with certain medical conditions, such as those who take blood thinners, never be on a ladder or the roof. Falling can cause internal bleeding.\u201d And if you\u2019re on foot, stay off treacherous ice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get a flu shot<\/strong><br \/>\nFlu shots don\u2019t guarantee you won\u2019t be spending the holidays in bed with aches and a fever, but they improve your odds, said Dr. Kelby Bethards, UCHealth\u2019s urgent care medical director. \u201cIn my experience, people who get flu shots don\u2019t get as sick if they do get the flu,\u201d he added. \u201cThe vaccine seems to temper the illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t get burned<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThings that bubble when you\u2019re cooking cause the worst burns,\u201d Teumer said. \u201cThat\u2019s because grease increases the penetration of the wounds.\u201d He recommends silicone cooking mitts over cloth because they offer better protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dress for the weather<\/strong><br \/>\nBethards said that anyone spending time outdoors in bitter cold needs a warm hat, gloves and boots. \u201cWe see frost nip on ears and toes,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd sometimes, cold air can trigger asthma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drive safely<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth holiday travel and increased shopping traffic up the risk of motor vehicle accidents, Teumer said. \u201cSlow down, wear a seat belt \u2014 a helmet if you\u2019re on a motorcycle \u2014 and don\u2019t drive unless you\u2019re completely sober,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t overindulge<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThanksgiving and Christmas will tell you how well your gallbladder is doing,\u201d Teumer said. \u201cIf you\u2019re having abdominal pain, you might well be overindulging in fatty, greasy or spicy foods.\u201d Overdoing alcohol and drugs is the culprit behind many holiday injuries, Bethards said. \u201cDon\u2019t put up holiday lights, cook, drive or do anything remotely dangerous if you\u2019re not sober,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to have tragedies instead of holidays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get help for emotional challenges<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cHolidays can be hard on people, especially if you\u2019ve had a loss,\u201d Bethards said. Not only does depression tend to worsen, according to Teumer, but the risk of domestic violence and suicide also rise. \u201cCommunicate with your loved ones,\u201d he advised. \u201cStay on top of any medication your doctor has prescribed for you.\u201d \u201cThe holidays are a time of joy and happiness, but they can also be a time of sadness,\u201d Bethards added. \u201cPeople need to know that urgent care clinics and emergency rooms are places they can go to get help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know where to go<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you do get sick or hurt, call your primary care provider or head to urgent care for minor problems, but go to the emergency room or call 911 for serious or life-threatening problems. Find a primary care, urgent care or emergency location based on the region you live in: Metro Denver area, Northern Colorado (Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park, Greeley, Longmont, Cheyenne), Southern Colorado (Colorado Springs area).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Illness and injury can ruin an otherwise lovely holiday season.
