Photo by Kathryn Scott for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Attend a Stop the Bleed workshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma, said Cindy Joseph, trauma outreach and education manager for UCHealth in northern Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A person can lose almost all their blood volume in under five minutes \u2014 that&#8217;s the biggest motivating factor in learning Step the Bleed concepts and skills,&#8221; Joseph said.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout northern and southern Colorado, people can sign up for a free, 50-minute Stop the Bleed course that provides education about skills needed in an emergency. <div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<h4><strong>Be prepared: Learn to Stop the Bleed during a free workshop<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>UCHealth wants to educate as many Coloradans as possible on how to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergencies. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/community-health\/injury-prevention-and-outreach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find a workshop nearby<\/a> that works with your schedule.<\/div>\n<p>Joseph&#8217;s team has seen firsthand how knowledge is power.<\/p>\n<p>At a local job site, workers were able to pack and put pressure on a co-worker&#8217;s large wound. It stopped the bleeding enough to buy time for emergency medical personnel to arrive. The workers&#8217; knowledge and their actions saved the man&#8217;s life. In another case, bystanders encountered a motorcycle accident and applied pressure to the rider\u2019s wound to stop his bleeding. That person also survived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone could see uncontrolled, life-threatening hemorrhage in any area of the body. They could see an injury in an extremity, groin, armpit and head. People also need blood products for cancer treatments and other medical conditions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span><strong>Did you know that one blood donation burns 650 calories?<\/strong><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>Donating blood is about a 45-minute process, but the donation of one pint takes less than 10 minutes. People can donate every 56 days; the body replenishes fluid lost during donation within 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Donations not only provide the center with red blood cells. Plasma is also extracted from a qualified donor during the donation. Donors also can choose to donate platelets \u2014 a 90- to 120-minute process. Visit a UCHealth blood donation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/\">location&#8217;s web page<\/a> for more information. <\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Learn CPR <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A person experiencing cardiac arrest outside of a hospital is almost twice as likely to survive when someone performs CPR while emergency personnel are en route, according to the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000001054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of the American Heart Association<\/a>. Sadly, fewer than 40% of people who experience cardiac arrest receive bystander CPR.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why learn hands-only CPR?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death.\u00a0Hands-Only CPR performed by a bystander is as effective as conventional CPR in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest outside of a hospital.<\/li>\n<li>Survival may depend upon immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.<\/li>\n<li>90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple the chance of survival.<\/li>\n<li>Hands-only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest at home, work or in public.<\/li>\n<li>70% of out-of-hospital cardiac events happen in homes and residential settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Studies show that training early and often, beginning with middle and high school students, creates a culture of action that prepares and motivates people to help when someone has a cardiac arrest.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">YVMC in Steamboat offers Heartsaver CPR, AED and 1st Air courses. You can find them on <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/uchealthevents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCHealth&#8217;s events page<\/a>. UCHealth often provides infant CPR classes with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/car-seat-education-class-offers-vital-information-and-new-car-seats\/\">Car Seat Education Class<\/a>, also found on the events page. Other CPR classes are offered <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/take-a-class\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through your local Red Cross.<\/a> <\/div>\n<p>UCHealth collaborates with Poudre Fire Authority,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/taking-a-community-wide-approach-to-saving-lives\/\">PulsePoint<\/a>\u00a0and UCHealth EMS to teach hands-only CPR and AED use to seventh- and 10th-graders in its\u00a0<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/community-health\/healthy-hearts\/\">Healthy Hearts and Minds<\/a> education and screening program.<\/p>\n<p>Participants learn the signs of a heart attack and stroke symptoms and act out real-life scenarios to practice techniques. Biofeedback manikins let students know if they are pushing deeply and quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Practicing these skills and making the conscious decision that you will help if needed is an essential step to learning these lifesaving skills.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span><strong>What is PulsePoint, and how can this free app help you save a life?<\/strong><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>PulsePoint is a free phone app that interfaces with emergency communication centers. It notifies app users when CPR is needed nearby and pinpoints the closest AED (automated external defibrillator) locations. Fort Collins joined more than 700 other communities in the United States in February 2015 in promoting the app.<\/p>\n<p>In one example of its success, a PulsePoint push notification was sent out when a person began to choke while eating at a restaurant. An off-duty firefighter, who was nearby when he received the push, walked across the street, prepared to help. When he arrived, the victim had cleared the obstruction and was OK. This immediate action could have saved a life.<\/p>\n<p>Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death for people over age 40 in the United States. If the heart stops, the chance of survival drops 10% with each passing minute without intervention. In 2013, about 360,000 people suffered sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S. outside a hospital.
