{"id":68694,"date":"2023-05-03T07:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T13:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=68694"},"modified":"2023-08-10T08:10:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T14:10:50","slug":"charis-kee-and-mindy-hager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/charis-kee-and-mindy-hager\/","title":{"rendered":"Charis Kee and Mindy Hager"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><figure id=\"attachment_69678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69678\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69678\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/25144918\/uchealth-ymep-charis-and-mindy-ymep-web.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Charis Kee and Mindy Hager\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mindy Hager and Charis Kee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Nurse managers identify stroke at gift shop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When two nurse managers stopped by the UCHealth Greeley Hospital gift shop on a winter afternoon, their attentiveness and quick action saved a life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristmas stuff was on clearance,\u201d said Charis Kee, perioperative nurse manager, who had been eyeing a decorative plate for her sister. \u201cI was like, \u2018We\u2019ve got to go look.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She and Mindy Hager, associate nurse manager with the operating room, walked to the gift shop and made small talk with Carol, the septuagenarian volunteer at the cash register, as they perused the items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was playing a word game on my phone,\u201d Carol said. \u201cAll the sudden, my vision went kerflooey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hager and Kee noticed she was leaning slightly to one side. But neither had previously been acquainted with Carol, and they didn\u2019t know her baseline condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharis at one point asked, \u2018Is this part of the Christmas clearance?\u2019 and there was a delayed response,\u201d Hager said. \u201cWe were, at that point, oblivious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They continued to speak with Carol and noticed her speech was coherent but delayed. She tried to stand and began to tip, so they helped her sit back down. But she said it was probably back pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe looked at Carol and back at each other: \u2018Something is not right,\u2019\u201d Kee said, adding she and Hager began noticing other symptoms consistent with a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>When someone is experiencing a stroke, it is crucial to <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/treatments-procedures\/stroke-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quickly get the person emergency care<\/a> to potentially prevent extensive brain damage.<\/p>\n<p>Kee ran to the administrative office to ask Sueann Swetzig, an executive assistant more familiar with Carol, whether it was normal for her to lean to one side. It wasn\u2019t. Hager called security for a wheelchair and quickly grabbed a piece of paper to take down Carol\u2019s name and emergency contact in case she lost consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey asked me if I knew what they were doing,\u201d Carol said. \u201cI knew whatever needed done was going to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She remembers them wheeling her into the emergency department where she received \u201csome kind of shot, like a miracle drug.\u201d She stayed two nights at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies and, two to three weeks later, had a doctor\u2019s letter saying it was OK to return to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy neurologist said I don\u2019t even need to see her again unless I have some more symptoms sometime,\u201d Carol said. \u201cTechnically, I guess I\u2019m just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s returned to her weekly, three-hour shift at the gift shop \u2013 and also, to volunteering at the local civic center and actively participating in three quilting guilds.<\/p>\n<p>The day of the stroke, she almost considered leaving the shop early because of a snowstorm. \u201cThere was no use driving home. It was not going to get much worse or better, so I just thought I\u2019d stay,\u201d Carol said. \u201cThank goodness I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Kee and Hager escorted Carol to the emergency department, Swetzig brought along her purse and coat. And they closed up the shop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told my sister, \u2018You helped me save a life today,\u2019\u201d Kee said. \u201cIf I hadn\u2019t seen that plate in there, we wouldn\u2019t have saved that patient\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kee has been with UCHealth for 17 years, and Hager has been with the organization for two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose two girls saved my life,\u201d Carol said. \u201cWhen they found out I was back at the gift shop, they came to check on me.
