Photo courtesy of the National Park Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We love Colorado, and our state is celebrating a very big birthday this year.<\/p>\n<p>Happy 150<sup>th<\/sup> Colorado!<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 1, 1876, Colorado officially became a state. Before that, Colorado was a territory, and it took five attempts for boosters in stunning Colorado to persuade federal officials that we deserved to become a state.<\/p>\n<p>The timing proved fortuitous and gave Colorado its nickname as the \u201cCentennial State.\u201d That\u2019s because our birth as a state coincided with the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1776-1783\/declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signing of the Declaration of Independence<\/a> and the founding of the United States in 1776.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration of a 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary is known as a sesquicentennial. (Sesqui is a root word that comes from the Latin and <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/sesqui-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simply means \u201cone-and-a-half.\u201d)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In honor of Colorado\u2019s sesquicentennial, we\u2019re sharing a list (in no particular order) of 150 fun places you can visit and interesting things to do in our spectacular square state.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Let the adventures begin<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Start with a visit to History Colorado, where you can <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/exhibit\/38th-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enjoy an exhibit all about Colorado\u2019s sesquicentennial<\/a>. Is the building haunted? <a href=\"https:\/\/content.leg.colorado.gov\/content\/tour-information\">Take a tour and find out.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Love western art? <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/anschutzcollection.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit the American Museum of Western Art<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You also can check out western art at one of Colorado\u2019s historic hotels, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadmoor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Broadmoor.<\/a> Stay for a night, stroll around the lake or join a sing-along at the famous Golden Bee. (Get other ideas for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/things-to-do-in-colorado-if-you-dont-ski\/\">things to do in Colorado if you don\u2019t ski.<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Another historic gem is Denver\u2019s famous <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brownpalace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown Palace Hotel<\/a>, where you can enjoy high tea any time of year. A visit to the Brown\u2019s soaring 8-story atrium is especially beautiful during the holidays when hotel managers gussy up the hotel.<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re on the topic of interesting \u201cBrowns,\u201d have you ever heard of the Unsinkable Molly Brown? She was a legend in Colorado and helped people survive the Titanic. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mollybrown.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You can visit her former home in Denver<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Native Americans called Colorado home for generations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/native-american-tribes-in-colorado-sites-centers\/\">Visit the Ute Mountain Museum and other special places<\/a> that highlight the role of indigenous people in Colorado.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/what-is-a-powwow-celebrate-indigenous-culture\/\">Attend a Native American powwow<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Test your fitness at the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/manitou-incline-challenges-fitness-junkies\/\">Manitou Incline<\/a> west of Colorado Springs.<\/li>\n<li>Fitness buffs also can climb the red stone steps (or the seats) at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redrocksonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Rocks<\/a>, the iconic natural amphitheater in Morrison, west of Denver. Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re a fan of outdoor concerts, head to \u201cThe Mish.\u201d <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themishawaka.com\/mishawaka-info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This century-old venue<\/a>, officially called Mishawaka Amphitheatre, has drawn music lovers to the Cache la Poudre River canyon for generations and recently earned major bragging rights after being named <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westword.com\/best-of-denver\/2026\/readers-choice\/best-animal-shelter-40860556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Westword\u2019s 2026 (Readers\u2019 Choice)<\/a> Best Outdoor Venue. If you\u2019re not able to make a concert, pack a lunch and drive up a beautiful canyon to The Mish on a Sunday afternoon. Bonus: on some Sundays, there are free concerts.<\/li>\n<li>Walk along the 3-mile <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/pueblolevee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pueblo Levee<\/a> and marvel at the mural artwork that adorns it. Thomas Dambo\u2019s other troll sculpture, Isak Heartstone, is in Breckenridge.<\/li>\n<li>Take a factory tour at <a href=\"https:\/\/libertypuzzles.com\/\">Liberty Puzzles<\/a> in Boulder to see how they make their much-loved wooden puzzles. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/celestialseasonings.com\/pages\/visit-celestial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celestial Seasonings<\/a> tea, also in Boulder, offers factory tours, too. The space features a retractable roof, with showtimes coinciding with sunrise and sunset.<\/li>\n<li>Take a spin on one of the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocarousels.com\/locations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historic carousels in Colorado<\/a>, including in Burlington, Denver, Pueblo, Colorado Springs and more.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about the marble that sculptors used to create the Lincoln Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and hundreds of other buildings at the <a href=\"https:\/\/marblecolorado.org\/attractions\/marble-museum\/\">Marble Museum<\/a> in this former mining town.<\/li>\n<li>While in Marble, visit the much photographed <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/marblecolorado.org\/attractions\/crystal-mill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crystal Mill,<\/a> reachable only by four-wheel drive, mountain bike or hiking.<\/li>\n<li>Take a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/programs\/recreation\/mountainbike\/fruitatrails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mountain bike excursion in Fruita<\/a>, which has become a premier destination with more than 250 miles of trails. This is just one of many mountain bike opportunities throughout Colorado.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/trinidad-history-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trinidad History Museum<\/a>, which occupies an entire city block with three historic buildings and heritage gardens that tell the story of this southern Colorado city\u2019s place in the American West and the Santa Fe Trail.<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.costillacounty.gov\/town-san-luis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado\u2019s oldest town<\/a>, San Luis.<\/li>\n<li>Ride one of two Amtrak train routes in Colorado:\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/southwest-chief-train?msockid=13e926f72a0267ba07af30d32bea665e\">Southwest Chief<\/a> Amtrak line makes stops in Lamar, La Junta and Trinidad, Colorado before heading to Kansas or New Mexico, depending which direction you\u2019re headed.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/california-zephyr-train?msockid=13e926f72a0267ba07af30d32bea665e\">California Zephyr<\/a> Amtrak line travels through northeastern Colorado with a stop in Denver. Don\u2019t miss seeing Union Station in Lower Downtown, which opened in 1881, was replaced in 1914 and was lovingly restored in 2014. The imposing Beaux-Arts style depot has hosted multiple presidents and countless travelers. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/scenic-train-rides-in-colorado-explore-beauty-and-history\/\">scenic Zephyr train route<\/a> winds into the mountains to Winter Park, then follows the Colorado River across the state and into Utah, servicing views you can\u2019t get from the highway \u2014 including, on busy rafting days, a few unexpected \u201cmoons\u201d along the riverbanks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Train buffs can enjoy these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/scenic-train-rides-in-colorado-explore-beauty-and-history\/\">other rail excursions in Colorado<\/a>. Colorado has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/colorado-scenic-byways-to-explore-now\/\">26 scenic and historic byways<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stand in four states at once at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/visitfourcorners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Corners<\/a>, where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico state borders meet.<\/li>\n<li>Watch a drive-in movie from your hotel room at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bestwesternmoviemanor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Best Western Movie Manor<\/a> in Del Norte. Photo by Sue Little, courtesy of Crested Butte Wildflower Festival.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>Take in world-class theater at 9,000 feet with the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/creederep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creede Repertory Theatre<\/a>, founded in 1966 in this remote box canyon town in southern Colorado.<\/li>\n<li>While in Creede, try 4-wheeling the famous <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.creede.com\/bachelor-loop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bachelor Loop<\/a>, where you\u2019ll see countless mines that kept this part of Colorado humming for years.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the \u201cSwitzerland of America,\u201d <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitouray.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ouray<\/a>, Colorado, which is surrounded by soaring peaks in the San Juan mountain range. While you\u2019re there, test your nerves and drive the \u201cMillion Dollar Highway,\u201d a 25-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray. Be warned. It\u2019s home to all sorts of rides and attractions, including a bridge suspended 1,000 feet above the river that carved this giant gorge.<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/great-sand-dunes-national-park-every-season\/\">Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve<\/a>. It\u2019s a magical place year-round. You can sled on sand at this park. We highly recommend being there for sunrise and sunset.<\/li>\n<li>In Grand Lake, you can stroll through town o<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitgrandcounty.com\/blog\/things-to-do-grand-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">n wooden sidewalks and can do a short hike to Adams Falls.<\/a> A much tougher hike will take you to the very well-preserved <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/gograndlake.com\/things-to-do\/hiking-trails\/east-shore-trail-to-the-historic-fire-tower-on-shadow-mountain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shadow Mountain fire lookout tower.<\/a> People who love fire towers and history can climb to the top of others that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and U.S. Forest Service crews in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> Staffers who spent summers in these towers once guarded forests in Colorado. A few towers remain, providing <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/firelookout.org\/lookouts\/us\/co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those who can find them<\/a> with amazing views of Colorado\u2019s vast wilderness.<\/li>\n<li>Perched above Estes Park, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stanleyhotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Stanley Hotel<\/a> has a famously eerie backstory that\u2019s worth checking out. (Hint: this hotel inspired Stephen King\u2019s The Shining.)<\/li>\n<li>Unlike the Midwest, fireflies are uncommon in Colorado, so catching their glow feels like you\u2019ve stumbled onto a magical secret. These \u201clightning bugs\u201d do frequent a few places in Colorado during a certain time of year. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergazette.com\/2025\/07\/28\/here-are-5-places-where-you-can-see-fireflies-in-colorado-038a8d58-8b27-4450-b985-161a624cf24c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Denver Gazette<\/a> highlights a few of those places.<\/li>\n<li>Take in one of the many art museums in Colorado, including the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denverartmuseum.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver Art Museum<\/a>, founded in 1893 and with 70,000 works of art in 12 collections; the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fac.coloradocollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College<\/a>, which has three Chihuly chandeliers; or the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/clyffordstillmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clyfford Still Museum in Denve<\/a>r, which has nearly all of this abstract expressionist artist\u2019s work. There also are art museums in Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Boulder, to name a few.<\/li>\n<li>Drive up a Colorado 14er, or a peak with an elevation of 14,000 feet or more. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.codot.gov\/travel\/coloradobyways\/north-central\/mount-evans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Blue Sky<\/a> has a road to the top. So does <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pikespeak.us.com\/activities\/drive-to-the-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pikes Peak,<\/a> with a toll.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re in great shape and are willing to start hiking well before dawn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/want-to-try-climbing-a-colorado-14er-start-planning\/\">try climbing a 14er<\/a>. Be prepared as these peaks can be dangerous.<\/li>\n<li>Another tough but legendary hike is <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/r02\/whiteriver\/recreation\/aspen-crested-butte-east-maroon-th-1983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the trip from Aspen to Crested Butte<\/a> (or the other way around).<\/li>\n<li>Spend the day tiptoeing through the tulips, or whatever\u2019s in bloom, at a botanic garden. The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicgardens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver Botanic Gardens<\/a> has two locations offering an array of events along with acres of stunning plants and trees. Or visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yampariverbotanicpark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yampa River Botanic Park<\/a> in Steamboat Springs or the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bettyfordalpinegardens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Betty Ford Alpine Gardens<\/a> in Vail.<\/li>\n<li>Take in the towering red rock formations at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/coloradosprings.gov\/gog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garden of the Gods<\/a> in Colorado Springs by car, on foot or on a bike. The former town is now a Homestead National Historic Park.<\/li>\n<li>Step inside a re-created 1840s adobe trading post and plaza at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/el-pueblo-history-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Pueblo History Museum<\/a>. Once the home of Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche and Ute peoples, it became a chemical weapons manufacturing facility after the attack on Pearl Harbor before undergoing an extensive cleanup and restoration.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dralamountain.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drala Mountain Center<\/a> near Red Feather Lakes and walk to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya.<br \/>\nStupas traditionally serve as places of reflection and are designed to promote harmony, health, peace and well\u2011being for visitors and the surrounding landscape.<\/li>\n<li>Play hide-and-seek in the arroyos that lead to the Pawnee Buttes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uchealth.org\/today\/pawnee-national-grassland-history-camping-stargazing-hiking-off-road-exploring\/\">Pawnee National Grasslands<\/a> in northern Colorado. Scientists at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/visit\/ncar-tours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/a> study everything related to the natural word, and the center&#8217;s visitor center is open 363 days a year, with tours available along with nice hikes around the center.<\/li>\n<li>The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/poudretrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poudre River Trail<\/a> now connects Bellvue to Greeley with 45 miles of paved trail, offering a long ribbon of river and cottonwoods. In 1924, a fiery rock from space crashed to Earth near present-day Johnstown, startling mourners and becoming one of the state\u2019s strangest true stories.<\/li>\n<li>Hike up to a glacier. Colorado still has a handful of glaciers (although they\u2019re melting fast). One of the most accessible is <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/visitclearcreek.com\/st-marys-glacier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Mary\u2019s Glacier<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stroll, run or ride your horse on the 71-mile <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/visit.highlinecanal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Line Canal<\/a>, one of the longest urban trail systems in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>Visit Colorado\u2019s <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/state-parks\/fishers-peak-state-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newest state park, Fishers Peak<\/a>, near Trinidad.<\/li>\n<li>Hike to <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denvergazette.com\/2018\/05\/21\/the-natural-water-slide-in-san-isabel-national-forest-5b76ac8d-9485-5897-a608-1041758f376c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a natural water slide<\/a> in the San Isabel National Forest near Rye. This <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/colorado\/natural-water-slide-at-san-isabel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secret spot near Lake Isabel<\/a> has no signs and can be tough to find and navigate. But on a hot day, you can glide over smooth rocks and cool off in a refreshing Colorado creek.<\/li>\n<li><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/great-pick-your-own-pumpkin-farms-in-colorado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pick your own pumpkin for Halloween<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bouldercolorado.gov\/trail\/royal-arch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hike to Royal Arch<\/a> in Boulder\u2019s Chautauqua Park.<\/li>\n<li>View colorful wood carvings or enjoy at cup of tea at Boulder\u2019s Dushanbe Tea House. To honor its sister-city relationship with Boulder, the mayor of Dushanbe in Tajikistan enlisted 40 artisans to create this peaceful building, <a id=\"\" href=\"%20chief%20architect%20Lado%20Shanidze%20of%20Tajikistan%20guided%20the%20design,%20while%20American%20architect%20Vern%20Seieroe%20oversaw%20the%20adaptation%20and%20reconstruction%20in%20Boulder.%20Together,%20they%20ensured%20that%20this%20remarkable%20work%20of%20art%20would%20become%20a%20lasting%20cultural%20landmark%20and%20a%20symbol%20of%20global%20friendship.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which has become a symbol of international friendship<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Head out on an urban scavenger hunt. Can you find <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/visitdenver.com\/things-to-do\/arts-culture\/blue-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the famous blue bear in downtown Denver<\/a>? And don\u2019t miss the famous blue horse statue at Denver International Airport. Visit a museum that\u2019s perfect for flight enthusiasts of all ages. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/wingsmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wings Over the Rockies<\/a> is Colorado\u2019s official Air and Space Museum with locations at the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver and an immersive flight experience at Centennial Airport.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/educational-resources\/highest-and-lowest-elevations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest and lowest points in Colorado<\/a>. The high point is Mount Elbert, which tops out at a lofty 14,433 feet. The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/r02\/psicc\/recreation\/mount-elbert-fourteener\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hike to the summit<\/a> is not easy. Held from mid-June through late August, the rodeo brings professional riders to town and delivers family-friendly fun each summer weekend. The site came to be known as <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/publications\/snowmastodon-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSnowmastodon.\u201d<\/a> Volunteers joined experts from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a remarkable dig. You can see the site in Snowmass and the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmns.org\/catalyst\/museum-stories\/when-elephants-ruled-colorado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discoveries from the dig at the museum in Denver<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re up for a hike or a 4-wheeling adventure, visit <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/gilpincounty.colorado.gov\/the-history-of-gilpin-county\/rollinsville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rollinsville<\/a>, where the founder of the town, John Quincy Adams Rollins, built the first toll road over the Continental Divide. A train route followed later.<\/li>\n<li>Gaze up at what was once <a id=\"\" href=\"North%20American%20Aerospace%20Defense%20Command%20(NORAD)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a secret military installation inside Cheyenne Mountain<\/a> in Colorado Springs. The facility became operational during the height of the Colorado war in 1967. NORAD, which stands for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, operated the facility. It\u2019s not open to tours, but it&#8217;s no longer top secret. These days, NORAD officials take on extra duties around the holidays when they <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noradsanta.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">track Santa\u2019s trip around the globe on Christmas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ve probably heard of Magic Mountain, an amusement park in California. There\u2019s also a Magic Mountain in Colorado. And it\u2019s <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmns.org\/science\/research\/magic-mountain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a community archaeological project<\/a>. Now owned by the city of Golden, this site is considered one the most significant archaeological locations in Colorado. Experts are finding remnants of people who lived in the area 9,000 years ago.<\/li>\n<li><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/neighborhood-history-guide\/east-colfax-avenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Explore Colfax Avenue, the longest road in the U.S.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In Boulder, you can hike up <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bouldercolorado.gov\/trail\/flagstaff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flagstaff Mountain<\/a> and peer down at another very significant landmark: Baseline Road. Long before the city grew, surveyors in the mid 1850s marked a dirt road that stretched from east to west and later became Baseline, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/amerisurv.com\/2007\/07\/26\/the-path-to-the-proper-summit-of-the-rockies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the exact path of the 40th parallel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Visit a unique library that documents Black history: <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/blair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver\u2019s Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library<\/a>. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/about\/tours-and-speaker-requests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special tours are available<\/a> and visitors can delve in the archives.<\/li>\n<li>Nearby, check out Five Points in Denver, a place where five streets come together. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/history.denverlibrary.org\/news\/events\/jazz-five-points-brief-history-part-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This neighborhood once was home to Jazz legends.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Check out the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffco.us\/3792\/Clear-Creek-Trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Clear Creek Trail<\/a>, which will someday be a 65-mile trail connecting the South Platte Trail in Denver with the headwaters of Clear Creek on Loveland Pass.\n<figure id=\"attachment_90249\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90249\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90249\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/05\/04134224\/clear-creek-trail-Jefferson-County-web.webp\" alt=\"The Clear Creek Trail is a 65-mile trail that will one day connect the South Platte Trail in Denver to the headwaters of Clear Creek at Loveland Pass. Colorado is home to <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/skiloveland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loveland Ski Area<\/a> and <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lovgov.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loveland,<\/a> northern Colorado\u2019s \u201cSweetheart City,\u201d where <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/loveland.org\/programs\/valentine-re-mailing-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can send Valentine\u2019s Day greetings<\/a> to be \u201cremailed\u201d with a special stamp from Loveland.<\/li>\n<li>Visit one of Colorado\u2019s most unusual tourist attractions in the San Luis Valley. Visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/headwatersriverjourney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Headwaters River Journey<\/a> in Winter Park to learn about Colorado\u2019s precious water.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy a bike ride on the South Platte Trail that winds from Denver south to Littleton. Take time during your ride to visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssprd.org\/Nature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carson Nature Center,<\/a> where you can learn about <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssprd.org\/News-And-Events\/Post\/20495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a devastating flood that hit the area in 1965<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Eat donuts at high altitude. We\u2019re all about health, so we don&#8217;t usually promote confections. But if you make it to the top of Pikes Peak on foot, in a car or on the train, you might as well indulge in one of the famous donuts at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cograilway.com\/the-new-experience\/pikes-peak-visitor-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summit Visitor Center<\/a>.
