{"id":9501,"date":"2017-02-14T16:12:02","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T23:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=9501"},"modified":"2021-09-07T17:21:40","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T23:21:40","slug":"studies-chemo-hair-loss-treatments-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/studies-chemo-hair-loss-treatments-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Studies: chemo hair loss treatments work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Two just-released studies suggest that complete hair loss is no longer inevitable for women undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The studies, which appear in the Feb. 14 issue of <em>JAMA<\/em>, examined the use of two different scalp-cooling devices to reduce hair loss, or alopecia, in women with early-stage breast cancer. The devices \u2013 the DigniCap and the Orbis Paxman Hair Loss Prevention System \u2013 both include caps that fit over the skull and are connected to a machine that delivers temperature-regulated coolant to the scalp.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that the chilled hair follicles will absorb less of the toxic chemotherapy drugs, thereby keeping more of them intact \u2013 and more hair on the patient\u2019s head.<\/p>\n<p>The data indicate the devices are effective. In both studies, more than half of the women who used the devices before, during and after chemotherapy lost less than half their hair. The device, which was approved by the FDA in December 2015, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/a-device-to-cap-chemo-hair-loss\/\">used at the University of Colorado Cancer Center<\/a>. It is the only FDA-approved scalp-cooling device, while the Orbis is awaiting FDA approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of the studies is that they highlight a process by which women can prevent hair loss while receiving chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/virginia-borges-md-mmedsci-medical-oncology\/\">Virginia Borges, MD<\/a>, medical oncologist with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-cancer-center-anschutz\/\">University of Colorado Cancer Center<\/a>. \u201cIt is clinical research and scientific evidence confirming that these devices protect significantly against the hair loss that accompanies standard chemotherapy and that they appear to be safe and without any untoward consequences for the people who use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Borges emphasized the importance of preventing hair loss for women already facing and dealing with the physical rigors of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3209\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3209\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3209 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144614\/EXT_090116_Virginia20Borges.webp\" alt=\"DR. It seems like they bounce back faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, coverage of chemotherapy hair-loss treatment depends on the insurance company, Borges said. \u201cWe want to encourage all [companies] to think about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>JAMA <\/em>studies and stories addressing them could speed that process, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will be more aware and consumers will advocate for themselves that they want this,\u201d Borges said. \u201cSometimes you will hear people say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s just hair.\u2019 But the bottom line is, it\u2019s not just hair.
